Social Bookmarking

by Jessica Gendall and Dominic Chester

Have you ever e-mailed a friend or family member and sent them a link to a website you thought they might find interesting?

If so, you have participated in social bookmarking!

What is Social Bookmarking?
  • "Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata," (a huge collection of other data).
  •  It is tagging a website and saving it for later.
  • Instead of saving a website to your own web browser, you are saving it to the web so others will also have access to your favorite sites.

History of Social Bookmarking
  • "The concept of shared online bookmarks dates back to April 1996 with the launch of itList, the features of which included public and private bookmarks.
  • Within the next three years, online bookmark services became competitive, with venture-backed companies such as Backflip, Blink, Clip2, ClickMarks, HotLinks, and others entering the market.
  • Founded in 2003, del.icio.us pioneered tagging and coined the term social bookmarking."

How is Social Bookmarking Beneficial?
  • Social bookmarking is a great and unique way for online users to have the ability of storing, organizing, sharing and searching for bookmarks of web pages.
  • Through this system, online users can save the links to the web pages, which they want to remember to visit again, or the web pages that they want to share to other people.
  • Social bookmarking is generally public bookmarking and accomplishes two things:
                 1. All bookmarks would be accessible not just from a single computer, but from anywhere that one can access the internet.
                  2. Instead of keeping a long list of disorganized favorites and bookmarks in ones’ browser, one would have a great database of organized bookmarks to make it easier to find exactly what he/she need.

Advantages
  • It has search engine spiders (provides up to date data)
  • It is organized by the user with tags
  • One may search by tags
  • It creates new communities and insights
  • One may access bookmarks from any computer with the Internet
  • Bookmarks can be made public or private

Disadvantages
  • Tags are named from the user’s perspective
  • It is not polished
  • No standard set of keywords
  • Spelling errors
  • Overwhelming

How and Why Can Social Bookmarking be Used?
  • It’s an easy way for all students and parents to have the same bookmarks.
  • Parents will have a quick and accurate way to access links.
  • Parents do not have to worry about losing papers with specific links.
  • Students can easily access and view sites of resource and homework help from a teacher or with one another.
  • Teacher can provide information for students
  • Teachers can easily store and share information with colleagues
  • Teacher can discover new sites for information for their classsroom and their students
  • Resources are at fingertips (no searching through computer files or old papers or Googling)
