 Podcasting

  What is a podcast?

-A podcast is a free video or audio series - like a tv or radio show- that you can download from either iTunes or other podcast websites such as: podcasts.com and podcastalley.com

-A video or audio source that a person can subscribe to and download from the internet

-Podcast topics range from comedy and entertainment to education and foreign languages

-Podcasts are similar to magazine subscriptions- once you subscribe, all the new podcasts by that same creator will be automatically sent to you

   The History of Podcasting

-Podcasting is based off of audio-blogging where bloggers would instead of writing down their thoughts, would record themselves speaking and post it to their blogs

-As bandwidth capabilities increased, the format of the podcasts transformed from not only audio but to video as well

-Adam Curry is the man credited for coming up with the idea to make audio blogs automatic and have them delivered and synced to portable media devices

-The podcast gets its name from the iPod, because it was the most popular and successful mp3 player when the podcast was invented. This does not mean only the iPod is compatable, many different media devices are equipped to use podcasts

How to use podcasts in the classroom

-Teachers can use other podcasts to educate their students on certain subjects and access podcasts from around the world to inform students of different cultures

-Teachers can also record their lessons for students to watch/listen outside of class

-Students can record their own podcasts to show off their own work done for class

-Parents can access podcasts to keep track of the student's learning and progress
